Meet Dr. Rick Guthrie

Dr. Frederick V. “Rick” Guthrie Jr., is the 2016-2017 Tennessee Dental Association President.

A Bristol native, Rick is a graduate of Sullivan East High School, received his B.S. from the University of Tennessee, and earned his dental degree from the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry in 1987. He has served the dental needs of the Bristol area for twenty-nine years in private practice along with his father, Fred Guthrie, Sr., and now his son, Van Guthrie III, who recently graduated from the UT College of Dentistry and joined the practice.

At the state level,  Dr. Guthrie served on numerous councils and committees and six years as the First District Trustee. Dr. Guthrie is currently serving as the president of the Tennessee Dental Association. Dr. Guthrie received the TDA’s most esteemed annual award, the Fellowship Award, in 2000. Nationally, Dr. Guthrie is a member of the American Dental Association, Christian Medical and Dental Association, with fellowships in the International College of Dentists, the American College of Dentists and Pierre Fauchard Academy.  In addition to the TDA, Dr. Guthrie is a member of the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry Alumni Board, UT President Advisory Council and Delta Dental of TN Board.

Guthrie also serves the Healing Hands Health Clinic of Bristol as a charter member and recent facilitator of the UT student rotation partnership. He active in his church Addilynn Memorial UMC, and various community organizations. One of his passions is the relationship with the dental students and the New Dentist Committee of the TDA.

He is a leader in the Boy Scouts of America, where he has served as Scout Master for many years and currently serves as the East Tennessee Sequoyah Council President.

Rick and his wife, Cindy, reside in Bluff City, TN and are proud of their three children, Dr. Rachel Guthrie, Dr. Van Guthrie, and Ms. Sarah Guthrie, CPA. In his free time, he enjoys traveling and spending time with family and friends and the outdoors.
